West Point, N.Y. – Weather was a factor in postponing an early match-up against Hartford earlier in the season and on Thursday morning, the Fordham men's tennis team got its chance to face the Hawks, but had to do it in neutral territory. The Rams traveled up to Army, who play Hartford later in the day, and swept the Hawks, 7-0, en route to their seventh win in a row. Fordham is now 11-5 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 1-12 overall.
Â
The Rams dropped just on match on the day and only one other singles set en route to a decisive 7-0 victory, but it was that one dropped match that finished first on the day – a 6-1 defeat of
Tomas Cosmai and
Joseph Kavaloski, a team that has won five straight doubles matches and have just one loss as a team this year, to William Drumwright and Bryan Einstoss. Underclassmen duo
Victor Li and
Cameron Posillico answered with a 6-1 win of their own,
Pedro Alonso and
Nick Borak downed Daniel Rombola and Luis Montes, 6-2, to grab the doubles point from the first position.
Â
Li made quick work of Drumwright in #2 singles, 6-4, 6-3, before Cosmai dispatched Rombola, 6-2, 7-5, at the first position to put Fordham up, 3-0. Kavaloski, playing in the fifth spot for the first time in four weeks, dropped Montes, 6-3, 6-2 for the clincher.
Â
Posillico continued his recent hot streak with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Harrison Max, while Alonso and Borak added wins over Molina, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), and Einstoss, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
Â
The Rams are carrying serious momentum heading into the Atlantic 10 Championship that begins next Thursday in Charlottesville, Va. Fordham has five matches between then and now as final tune-ups and four of them will take place on the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts on campus, barring unforeseen weather. First up is a Saturday doubleheader against St. Francis Brooklyn and Sacred Heart, with the former match starting at 12 p.m.
Â
The Rams will also play Rockland and Adelphi on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. and then travel to La Salle next Wednesday before continuing on to Virginia.
