Men’s Golf Places Seventh at Til Duty is Done Collegiate Invitational

Joseph Trim and James Mongey tie for 27th overall

Baltic, Conn. – The Fordham University golf squad wrapped up competition today at the one of the most unique collegiate golf tournaments in the country, the Til Duty Is Done 2016 Collegiate Invitational at Mohegan Sun Golf Club. The Rams finished in seventh place.

The tournament is named for Til Duty Is Done, a Connecticut-based, non-profit organization dedicated to helping military veterans with reintegration after returning from duty overseas. The aim of TDID is to reduce veteran homelessness and unemployment by linking and integrating existing organizations that provide education, employment training, employment, healthcare, mentorship and other supportive services.

UConn golf partnered with TDID for the first time last spring, staging a hugely successful tournament, where many military veterans, serving as volunteers, mixed and mingled with the student-athletes to the benefit of both groups.

This year, the veterans have even more of a role in the tournament as UConn has received an NCAA waiver to allow a team from the Veteran Golfers Association (VGA) to compete alongside the 12 college teams in the tournament.

The host school, UConn, won the team title with an 846, followed by Rhode Island (857), Army (866), Bryant (877) and Hartford (877), who tied for fourth. The Rams were seventh with a team score of 906, seven strokes behind St. Bonaventure but eighth in front of Sacred Heart (914). LIU Brooklyn (915), Central Connecticut (928), UMass-Lowell (936) and Holy Cross (943) rounded out the team standings.

Individually, Joseph Trim and James Mongey were the top Fordham golfers, each carding a nine-over 225 in the three-round tournament to tie for 27th. Trim shoot a 75 and a 74 yesterday to go with a 76 today while Mongey shot an even-par 72 and an 80 yesterday and a one-over 73 today.

Behind Trim and Mongey was Thomas Hayes, who shot a two-over 74 today to go with his 78 and 74 on Saturday for a 226 total, tying him for 30th. Hayes led the Rams with six birdies in the third round.

Matt Schiller finished with a 232, tying him for 40th after carding a 79 today to go with a 76 and 77 from Saturday, while Oscar Cabanas also shot a 79 today for a 235 total, tying him for 51st.

The Rams return to action on Friday, April 29, as they open play at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championships to be held at The Villas of Grand Cyprus in Orlando, Fla.
