Joseph Chartouny Named Met Rookie of the Year

Ryan Rhoomes named second team All-Met

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham freshman Joseph Chartouny has been named the 2016 Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Rookie of the Year and senior forward Ryan Rhoomes was named second team All-Met it was announced today. Both players will receive their awards tonight at the 83rd annual NIT/MBWA Awards Dinner (oldest such awards program in the USA) at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown.
 
Chartouny becomes the third straight Ram to win the Met Rookie of the Year award, joining Eric Paschall (2015) and Jon Severe (2014), and the sixth overall (Chris Gaston (2010), Bryant Dunston (2005) and Joe Paterno (1986)).
 
On the season, Chartouny, the 2016 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, averaged 11.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 6.2 assists/game. He led the Atlantic 10, and was 20th in the NCAA, in assists/game while he also led the conference in steals/game (2.2), ranking 16th in the NCAA, and was seventh in assist/turnover ratio (2.1). His 161 assists on the season is a Fordham freshman record, tied for fifth all-time for a Ram in a season, while his 6.2 apg average led all NCAA Division I freshmen.
 
Rhoomes, the lone Ram to start every game in 2015-2016, averaged 14.6 ppg and 9.7 rpg, both team highs, while recording 13 double-doubles, including seven in the last eight games. He also led the team in field goal percentage with a school record .647 (187-289) and blocked a team-best 57 shots. Rhoomes led the Atlantic 10 and was sixth in the NCAA Division I in field goal percentage while ranking second in the conference, and 30th in the nation, in rebounding.
 
Over his career, Rhoomes shot a school record .616 (389-631) from the field and pulled down 936 career rebounds, good for sixth on the Fordham all-time list, while his 146 career blocks is fifth all-time at Rose Hill.
 
The Rams closed out the 2015-2016 season with a 17-14 record, 8-10 in the Atlantic 10, and appeared in the 2016 CIT, Fordham's first postseason appearance since 1992. The 17 wins were the most since 2006-2007 while the eight conference wins were the most since 2006-2007. The Rams went 14-5 in the Rose Hill Gym, the most home wins ever in school history.
