Men's Tennis Downs Hofstra, 4-3, on the Road Saturday

Kavaloski Wins in Singles & Doubles, Posillico Clinches in Final Match

Box Score

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis team defeated Hofstra on the road, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in the team's first outdoor contest of the spring campaign. The match came down to #6 singles and Cameron Posillico was able to defeat his opponent in two sets. With the win, the Rams improve to 5-5 on the season, while the Pride are handed their first loss of the season and sit at 4-1 overall.

"The team showed a lot of resilience today," head coach Mike Sowter remarked, "We came out flat and struggled in doubles but we turned it around in singles action to get the win."

Fordham won the first contest of the match, #2 doubles, featuring Tomas Cosmai and Joseph Kavaloski. The duo defeated Yahn Gawrit and Zach Chang, 6-3, but Hofstra would rally to defeat their Fordham counterparts in the other two doubles contests to snatch the all-important point. In #1 doubles, reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Victor Li and Nick Borak fell to Niko Vulinovich and Gustav Akesson, 6-3, while Pedro Alonso and Posillico battled but ultimately lost, 7-6 (7-1), to Marcus Smith and Leo Pires.

The first singles match to finish was #3 singles after two games when Gawrit retired due to injury against Pedro Alonso, up 2-0 to start the match. Li made it three straight singles victories this spring with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Vulinovich in #2 singles but Hofstra's Akesson downed Borak, 6-1, 6-3, to even things at two apiece on the afternoon.

Kavaloski became the lone Ram to win both his singles and doubles matches on the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chang in #5 singles, but again the Pride evened things up with a hard-fought victory in #1 singles when Smith defeated Cosmai, 7-5, 6-1. Tied 3-3, the day came down to #6 singles between Posillico and Pires. Continuing the afternoon's trend of no extra sets, Posillico claimed victory for himself and the Rams with a 6-4, 7-5 clincher.

The Rams have now won two of their last three. Fordham returns to the Bronx to host Drew next Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
