Photo GalleryThe Fordham women's swimming & diving team continued competition at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Following day two, the Rams are in a very tight race near the top of the standings. Fordham is currently fourth with 168 points, but trail Davidson by just nine points for second and Duquesne by six points for third.
The Rams medaled twice on Thursday, beginning in the 200 individual medley. Junior
Megan Polaha won her second straight 200 IM title with a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 2:00.85, bettering her own mark of 2:01.31, set last year. Polaha has now won at least one event at three Atlantic 10 Championships.
In addition to Polaha,
Marie Feneron and
Theresa Goehring also scored in the 200 IM, as Feneron was tenth overall in 2:03.48, while
Theresa Goehring was 15
th in 2:06.91.
Wendy Espina-Esquivel Fordham's second medalist on Thursday was sophomore
Wendy Espina-Esquivel, who took silver in the one-meter dive with a score of 254.75. She becomes only the second Fordham diver to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors at the Championship, joining Andrea Krok (1M dive) in 2010.
On top of Espina-Esquivel's performance,
Natalie Wodniak also scored for Fordham, placing 16
th with a score of 193.00 points.
Fordham also had finalists in the 500 and 50 freestyle events. In the 500 freestyle,
Kalena Laurent placed 13
th overall with a time of 4:59.49 as the lone scorer in that event. The 50 freestyle saw
Megan Gray in the "B" final with
Shannon Lulley and
Chandler Lulley in the "A" final. Shannon had the best finish, taking fourth in 23.13 seconds, with Chandler in seventh (23.41) and Gray in 15
th (23.84).
The final event on day two was the 200 freestyle relay, where the Lulleys and Gray joined with
Tara Brunner to take fourth in the event with a school record time of 1:33.01. The previous record was 1:33.96, set at last year's championship.
Action continues at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday, beginning at 10:00 AM with the preliminaries of the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 backstroke, and the men's three meter dive. Finals for those events plus the 400 medley relay start at 6:30 PM.
