Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Fordham squash team opened its 2016-17 season on Saturday in Poughkeepsie, New York, where the Rams split two matches with Siena and Vassar.
In the opening match of the day, Fordham defeated Siena by an 8-1 score.
Peter Yuen led the way at the #1 slot, defeating Faizan Rahim, 11-7, 11-4, and 11-4, while six other Rams posted straight game victories, including Bruce Czachor (#2),
John Lennon (#3),
Jimmy Shinnick (#4),
Neil Patel (#6),
Justin Esposito (#7), and Will Beatrez (#8).
Anthony Salerno rounded out the Fordham victories at the ninth slot with a four-game win over Tom Caron, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8, and 11-3.
In match two, Vassar topped the Rams, 6-3.
The Rams captured three of the top four matches, but came up short in the final five. Yuen, Lennon and Shinnick each posted their second win of the day at the first, third, and fourth slots, respectively. Yuen defeated Vincent Mencotti, 11-9, 11-7, and 11-5, with Lennon taking down Sam Hammer, 11-5, 11-2, and 11-1. Shinnick won the opening game, 11-1, and led 8-0 in the second, before Ankit Khosala was forced to retire.
The Fordham squash team will next be in action on November 11-13, as they take part in the Navy Round Robin. The Rams face Navy on Friday at 7:00 PM, followed by Saturday matches against Washington and Johns Hopkins at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM, respectively. The weekend concludes with a Sunday match against the Navy "B" team at 9:00 AM.
