Newport News, Va. – Fordham volleyball standout
Olivia Fairchild was named this week's Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday, after the freshman's stellar play leading the Rams to a 2-0 road sweep this past weekend over George Washington and George Mason. This is Fairchild's first Player of the Week honor and second Rookie honor this year.
Â
Fairchild has enjoyed a torrid start to her Fordham career, ranking in the top 10 nationally in kills, points, and aces. The Phoenix, Ariz. native has helped the Rams to a 10-9 overall record this season, plus a 3-1 start to conference play that has her team tied for third in the standings.
Â
This past weekend, Fairchild was at her best, totaling 42 kills, 20 digs, and seven aces across two road wins and a 6-1 combined score. Fairchild helped the Rams to a sweep at George Washington with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, adding three aces to boot. It was her second-most efficient performance of the year, with a .394 attack percentage.
Â
A day later, Fairchild was slightly less efficient but tallied a record-breaking 24 kills on 53 total attacks (.283) to go with nine digs and four aces as Fordham rebounded from a first set loss to win the next three at George Mason. Her 24 kills were not only a season-high but a new school record for a four-set match, breaking the 14-year old mark of 23 set by Roxanne Hill in 2002. Fairchild also chipped in five block assists this weekend.
Â
Fairchild ranks third in the nation in aces (44), fifth in aces per set (0.59), sixth in points (372.0), eighth in kills (314), and 16
th in total attacks (762). Her 44 aces are also tops in the A-10 and have helped Fordham lead all of Division I with 140, nine more than Northern Arizona.
Â
Fairchild and the Rams are back in action this weekend for a back-to-back set in the Bronx. First up is Saint Louis on Friday, October 7, which is also the team's annual Dig Pink event. Saturday brings two-time defending conference champion Dayton. Both contests begin at 5 p.m. inside the Rose Hill Gym.
