Newport News, Va. – Fordham volleyball standout freshman
Olivia Fairchild has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon, after tallying 57 kills across two matches, including setting a new record for most kills in a three-set match and nearly breaking a 26-year old program record for kills in a match. The honor is Fairchild's third this season and fourth overall.
Â
Despite the two results, the Phoenix native shone yet gain this past weekend on the road. Kicking off a five-match road swing, the Rams headed to Duquesne where they battled but ultimately fell short in each set of a three-set loss. Fairchild finished one off her season-high but did it in one fewer set, tallying a program-record 23 kills across the three frames. Beth Crockett coincidentally set the mark at Duquesne back in 2000. The freshman also chipped in five digs, three block assists, and an ace.
Â
Two days later, Fordham and La Salle engaged in a terrific back-and-forth match that went down to the final points of the fifth set. Fairchild enjoyed a tremendous match and finished with 34 kills on 72 total attacks with just nine errors (.347), adding 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Fairchild fell just two kills short of Val Bosticco's record set in 1990 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Â
Fairchild now has 401 kills on the season, becoming the eighth Ram to ever reach that mark in a single season and where she currently sits in the single-season rankings, 10 behind Marija Markovic in seventh, but with several matches yet to play. She is currently sixth in the country, as well. Her current 4.46 kills per set pace, however, would be, by far, the best mark in school history for a single season. Tasha Johnston currently sits first with 3.82 in 2006.
Â
Fairchild is also one of the premier servers in the country, ranking third in the nation with 50 aces on the year. That mark is approaching the program top-10 for a season. Jenn Shea's 55 in 1992 currently are 10
