Photo GalleryBronx, N.Y. - With the first week of camp in the book it's time to start taking a position-by-position look at the 2015 Fordham University football Rams.
We start with one of the most important positions, quarterback, as the Rams look for someone to take over for
Mike Nebrich, who set numerous school passing records the past two years.
Fordham has five quarterbacks on the roster but none of them has attempted a pass in a college game. The group is led by junior
Kevin Anderson, who did see action in three games last year after transferring to Fordham from Marshall. As a senior at Boca Raton High School he completed 40-of-81 passes for 509 yards and five touchdowns in 2012 before suffering a season-ending injury, while as a junior, he completed 123-of-254 passes for 1,712 yards and 11 touchdowns and carried 59 times for 107 yards and three scores.
Joining Anderson is sophomore
Luke Medlock, a transfer from Florida International, who threw for 1,845 yards as a senior (third most in school history) at Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach, Florida.
Other quarterbacks on the roster include freshman
Colton Smith, a First Team All-State selection in Connecticut last fall, freshman
Jalen Ollie, who threw for 2,977 yards and 36 touchdowns as a senior at Glastonberry high school in 2013, and sophomore Clay Welch, who joined the team last fall.
Camp Notes
When the players took the field for practice there were a bunch of tuxedoed men sitting in the stands of Jack Coffey Field. Upon closer inspection they Rams realized it was one of their own as Larry Rhea, a four-year member of the squad from 2005-2008 and a part of the 2007 Patriot League championship team was the groom.
Practice ended with a field goal kicking knockout as head coach
Joe Moorhead tabbed
Garrick Mayweather, Jr. and
Stephen Hodge to draft two placekickers to represent the offense and defense, respectively, with the winner getting the edge point. Mayweather selected
Makay Redd, who connected on his attempt, and
Alejandro Cardenas, who missed. Hodge opted for a pair of newcomers,
Spencer Ferrigan, who hit the upright, and
Kyle Facibene, who missed, giving the offense the point.
Rhea wasn't the only former Ram in attendance as Bobby Kubacki and Chris Watkins took in the session and spoke with the team following practice. Both offensive linemen played from 2009-2012 and were members of head coach
Joe Moorhead's first Fordham team.
One other notable person was at practice today as freshman quarterback
Jalen Ollie's father, Kevin , was in the stands. Kevin Ollie is the head coach of the Connecticut men's basketball team, leading the Huskies to the 2014 national championship.
The team has Sunday off from practice but will assemble in the morining for photo day.
Coach Moorhead's quote of the day: "It's either 100% right or 100% wrong."
