Softball Lands Three on NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Teams

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Fordham softball team placed three members on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, it was announced Thursday by the association. Redshirt junior Rachel Gillen was voted to the First Team as a utility/position player, while senior Kayla Lombardo and sophomore Amy Van Hoven were voted to the Third Team as a catcher and second baseman, respectively.

Gillen is fresh off being named the Atlantic 10 Championship's Most Outstanding Player at last weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship. The southpaw has already been named First Team All-Atlantic 10 as a pitcher and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 as a designated player while earning six Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week accolades. In the circle, Gillen is 23-8 with a 2.28 ERA over 199.1 innings. She has appeared in 36 contests, with 30 starts, has recorded 18 complete games, including seven shutouts, and has accumulated 236 strikeouts, while opponents are hitting only .223 off her. At the plate, Gillen is slashing .373/.403/.556 with 15 runs, 47 hits, eight doubles, five home runs and 37 RBI.

Lombardo makes her second straight appearance on the Third Team. Already a First Team All-Atlantic 10 and Academic All-Atlantic 10 selection, the Ram backstop has started all 54 games. She is slashing .314/.434/.523 with 33 runs, 48 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 39 RBI and 25 walks.

Van Hoven was also selected First Team All-Atlantic 10 this season and has started all 52 games she has played in. The left-handed hitter is slashing .376/.412/.452 with 40 runs, 70 hits, six doubles, four triples, 24 RBI and 16 stolen bases.

Fordham begins the 2015 NCAA Division I Softball Championship Friday at the Harrisonburg Regional in Harrisonburg, Va. The third-seeded Rams are slated to take on second-seeded North Carolina State at 2 p.m. on the campus of James Madison.
