Photo GalleryBronx, N.Y. – The Fordham University women's tennis team hosted its first match of the spring season on Monday but ran into a hot Stony Brook team as the Seawolves shut out the Rams, 7-0, on the Hawthorn Rooney Courts.
The Rams opened the match by dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. Fordham's
Julie Leong and
Estelle Wong were victorious at third doubles over Adey Osabuohien and Becky Shtilkind, 8-4, but
Bella Genkina and
Anika Novacek were upended at second doubles by Polina Movchan and Yana Nikolaeva, 8-2, and
Elliesa Ball and
Sarah Ali fell to Nadia Smergut and Louise Badoche at first doubles, 8-5.
In singles play, the Rams forced a tiebreaker at second and fourth singles. Ali dropped the first set at second singles to Smergut, 6-3, before coming back to take the second by the same score. The two then started a third set which was converted to a tiebreaker with the score tied at four sets each. Smergut then took the tiebreaker, 7-4.
At fourth singles, Badoche won the first set over Leong, 6-2, but Leong fought back in the second, winning 6-4, to force a tiebreaker. Leong battled Badoche in the tiebreaker before falling, 11-9.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday, April 8, as they travel to Hamden, Conn., to face Quinnipiac University at 3:00 p.m.
