Box Score Charlottesville, Va. – The Fordham women's tennis squad, seeded fifth, opened the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championships with a 4-1 win over 12-seeded the University of Rhode Island today at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Rams advance to the quarterfinals where they will face fourth-seeded Davidson on Friday at 10:00 AM.
Fordham opened the match dropping the doubles point. Fordham's
Estelle Wong and
Julie Leong picked up an 8-1 win at third doubles over Elizaveta Sadovnikov and Jordan Rucks but Nithila Asokaraj and Kathleen Uy defeated
Bella Genkina and
Anika Novacek at the second position, 8-1, and Taylor Holden and Anna Peacock upended Fordham's
Sarah Ali and
Elliesa Ball at third doubles, 8-5, to pick up the point for Rhode Island.
Fordham won the match by taking the first four completed singles matches, all in straight sets.
Destiny Grunin got things started for Fordham with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Sadovnikov at fifth singles and then Leong took care of Nithila Asokaraj at the fourth spot, 6-2, 6-4.
Ali was the next Fordham finisher, taking second singles from Uy, 6-2, 6-2, before Ball clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Holden at first singles.
Wong was ahead of Peacock at third singles, 6-4, 5-2, when the match was halted.
