NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --Â For the fourth time this season, redshirt junior
Rachel Gillen was named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, but shares the honor with Dayton's Kayla English, it was announced Monday by the league.
Gillen went 3-0 in the circle over three starts and sported a 1.62 ERA with 20 strikeouts and just four walks while scattering 12 hits over 13.0 innings of work. The southpaw also combined on a shutout in the Rams' 6-0 victory over Massachusetts in Sunday's series finale in Amherst, Mass.
With the game already wrapped up, Gillen only needed to go 4.0 innings in a 15-2 win over Siena last Wednesday (4/8), as she allowed both runs (one earned) on just two hits, walked two and whiffed seven while battling very rainy conditions. In her next appearance, the series opener at UMass (4/11), Gillen set the tone with five innings of five-hit ball. She yielded two more earned runs, walked three and fanned nine. Gillen started the series finale the next day and scattered five hits, walked none and struck out four in 4.0 innings of work before giving way to the bullpen.
At the plate, Gillen finished 6-for-12 with one double, two runs, six RBI, two walks and one sacrifice fly while reaching base at a .533 clip and slugging .583.
The Rams return to action this Wednesday, April 15 when they travel to western New York to take on St. Bonaventure in a key Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
