Box Score Harrison, N.Y. – Fordham University's men's tennis' 6-1 win over Yeshiva University today at Life Time Athletics was notable for two reasons. One, it was the Rams' first win of the spring season and two, it was head coach Michael Sowter's 100
th career victory as a men's head coach.
The Rams opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning both completed doubles matches.
Pedro Alonzo and
Joseph Kavaloski won at second doubles over Yeshiva's Robby Rubin and Dmitri Lebedyev, 8-3, and
Joey Brander and
Harris Durkovic upended Charles Saka and Meir Burk, 8-2, at third doubles. Fordham's
Pol Giraldez and
Max Peara were ahead of David Papis Elon and Adam Wannon, 7-5, when the match was halted.
Fordham then took five of the six singles matches for the victory, all in straight sets. At second singles, Giraldez took Lebedyev, 6-4, 7-6 (10-0), while at third singles, Peara defeated Wannon, 6-0, 6-0. Alonzo upended Saka, 6-4, 6-2, at the fourth spot, Kavaloski bested Rubin, 6-1, 6-0, at fifth singles and Brander shut out Akiva Katz, at the sixth position, 6-0, 6-0.
Sowter arrived at Fordham University in January after serving two years as head coach at Hofstra (2006-2008), where he earned 18 wins, and six years at NJIT (2008-2014), where he accumulated 81 victories. He had also won 106 games as the women's head coach combined at the two schools.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, March 29, as they travel to Stony Brook University for a 3:00 p.m. match.
