Atlantic 10 ReleaseNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Fordham women's basketball standout
Emily Tapio was named the Co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league. Tapio, who collects her second player of the week accolade, shares the honor with Jonquel Jones of George Washington.
Tapio had a week to remember, as she averaged 14.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field in a pair of victories over St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's to help move the Rams into second place in the Atlantic 10 standings with a record of 9-2 and 17-7 overall.
The Brewster, N.Y. native scored 11 of her 13 points after halftime and ripped down a career-high 17 rebounds in the 54-51 victory over St. Bonaventure. She also handed out two assists and connected on 6-of-12 field goals while earning her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career.
But it was the game against Saint Joseph's that the Ram captain will never forget. Tapio scored on a layup with eight seconds left to give the Rams their first lead of the game at 48-47, and rejected the potential game-winning shot at the other end to cap an incredible come-from-behind victory.
Fordham founds itself down 10 with less than eight minutes to go, and Tapio connected on back-to-back buckets to trigger an 11-2 spurt, which cut the deficit to 43-42. When Saint Joseph's increased its lead back out to five, Tapio hit a tough turnaround jumper in the lane with 80 seconds left to bring the Rams back to within one at 47-46.
On the Hawks next possession, Tapio made a block, and the Rams were able to gain possession with 20 seconds remaining to set up the game-winning sequence.
Tapio finished with a game-high 16 points, with 14 coming in the second half, nine rebounds and three blocks to tie a career high.
Fordham returns to the court this Sunday, Feb. 15 when it travels to Kingston, R.I. to take on Rhode Island at 2 p.m.
