CWPA Scholar-Athlete StoryÂ
The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches and the Collegiate Water Polo Association have announced the 2014 Men's All-Academic and Scholar-Athlete Awards, respectively, honoring student-athletes with at least a 3.2 GPA or higher, and teams with at least a 3.0 GPA.
Â
This year, the Rams garnered the team award from both organizations with a 3.03 GPA, while seven individual players earned distinction.
Â
The ACWPC, as well as the CWPA, designates three types of All-Academic or Scholar-Athlete Awards as Outstanding (4.00-3.71), Superior (3.70-3.41), and Excellent (3.40-3.20). The Rams had four players,
Bobby Wurtz,
Ori Raz,
Alex Jahns, and
Alon Yoeli, receive "Superior" status, while three,
Davis DeFontes,
Mike Hay, and
Grant Keesling, earned "Excellent" status.
Â
For Wurtz, DeFontes, and Hay, this is the third consecutive year that they have been honored by both the CWPA and ACWPC, while being the first time for Raz, Jahns, Yoeli, and Keesling.
Â
"The ACWPC is proud to announce the 2014 Men's All-Academic Awards. This year we have over 160 athletes that not only excelled in the pool but in the classroom. This is a testament to the hard-work and determination shown everyday by student-athletes, coaches, and administrators," said Larry Sanders, the Executive Director of the ACWPC.
Â
Among CWPA schools, Fordham tied for the fourth-most selections with seven with Iona, Connecticut College, and Salem International.
