NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Fordham softball standout
Rachel Gillen was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week, it was announced Tuesday by the league.
Gillen made two starts for the Rams last weekend at the USF Presidents' Day Weekend Tournament and finished 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 11.2 innings of work, as she scattered 11 hits, walked six and fanned 16 while collecting a second shutout.
In Fordham's first game against local rival St. John's, Gillen stifled the Red Storm, 3-0, in her second straight complete-game shutout. She fanned a career-high 11, walked just one and yielded three hits, with two coming in St. John's final at-bat. She then received a no-decision against the hosts, South Florida, where she whiffed five over 4.2 innings in the circle. The Rams would go on to beat the Bulls, 14-6, and finish the tournament 4-1, with their only loss coming to #11/14 Tennessee.
Fordham returns to action this weekend, Feb. 20-22, when it travels to the Palmetto State to play four games at Furman's Paladin Classic in Greenville, S.C. and one other game against reigning Northeast Conference champion Bryant in Spartanburg, S.C. The Rams begin play Friday, Feb. 20 against Toledo at 11 a.m., before talking on Hampton at 1 p.m.
