Estelle Wong Wins B Singles at NJIT Winter Invitational

Sarah Ali and Elliesa Ball win doubles title

Newark, N.J. (January 25, 2015) – The Fordham women's tennis team opened their 2015 spring schedule at the NJIT Winter Invitational where Estelle Wong won the B singles title and Sarah Ali and Elliesa Ball teamed up to take the doubles championship.
 
In B singles play, Julie Leong defeated Army's Victoria Falk in the first round, 7-6 (5), 6-3, and then bested Isabelle Wagener from LIU in the semifinals, 6-1 and 6-1, to advance to the finals. Wong opened play with an 8-2 win over LIU's Nancy Zonneveld and then moved to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Marisa Quevedo from Seton Hall. A 6-1, 6-3 victory over Army's Bridget Guenard advanced Wong to the finals where she defeated her Fordham teammate, 6-2 and 6-3.
 
In other singles play, Destiny Grunin advanced to the C singles final with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(3), 10-5, win over Seton Hall's Shoemaker in the first match and a default win over Nathalie Habegger from NJIT in the semifinals. In the finals, Grunin fell to Seton Hall's Isabell Klingert, 6-3 and 6-3.
 
Carolina Sa also competed in C singles, defeating Army's Leslie Frankland, 6-2 and 6-0, in the first round before falling to Klingert in the next, 6-0 and 7-5.
 
Anika Novacek opened play in C singles with an 8-1 win over NJIT's Valerie Caroll, and then fell to Klingert, 6-2 and 6-4. In the backdraw, Novacek defeated Seton Hall's Madison Shoemaker in a match that went to a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, and then closed outplay with a win over Brittany ­­Thompson from LIU, 6-1 and 6-3.
 
In A singles, Ali opened with an 8-3 win over NJIT's Anna Rosas before getting knocked off by Hannah Liljekvist of Seton Hall in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. Ball fell in the first round of A singles to Army's Allyson Hayley in a marathon, winning the first set 7-6(10) before dropping the second, 6-3. In the tiebreaker, the two played an extended match with Hayley finally pulling off a 14-12 win.
 
In doubles action, Ali and Ball opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Seton Hall's Madison Shoemaker and Katie Kim and then advanced to the semifinals with an 8-2 victory over Molly Prins and Caroline Lorenzini of Army. In the semifinals, the Ram duo defeated LIU's Marine Dans and Caroline Koenigsfeldt, 8-3, to advance to the finals where they upended Hannah Liljekvist and Julie Keenan of Seton Hall, 8-2, to take the title.
 
In other double action for the Rams, Sa and Novacek defeated Army's Parker and Maya Falk in the first round before being edged by Dans and Koenigsfeldt from LIU, 8-7. Leong and Wong also won their first round match over NJIT's Carolina Zanotta and Nathalie Habegger, 8-5, and then upended Anna Guryanova and Isabelle Klinger from Seton Hall, 8-2. Leong and Wong then took Seton Hall's Liljekvist and Keenan to the limit, falling 8-7 (5).
 
The Rams return to action on Saturday, January 31, as they travel to Reading, Pa., to face Duquesne University in the Hillcrest Racquet Club at 5:00 p.m.
