Box ScoreJersey City, N.J. (January 25, 2015) – Even though the forecast calls for blizzard conditions on Monday, the Fordham University men's tennis squad opened its 2015 spring season today, falling to the Saint Peter's College, 4-3, in the Yanitelli Bubble.
The Rams opened play by taking the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches.
J.J. Tauil and
Max Peara defeated Carlos Carrera and Daniil Ivanov at first doubles, 8-7 (5), while
Pol Giraldez and
Mischa Koran took second doubles from Simon Jackermeier and Oliver Bellomi, 8-3.
Joey Brander and
Joseph Kavaloski completed the doubles sweep for Fordham with an 8-3 victory over Jorge Rodriguez and Andres-Sebastian Rojas at third doubles.
In singles play, Koran won at fourth singles over Rojas in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1, while Peara took third singles from Jackermeier in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6 (4). But the Rams suffered losses at first singles as Tauil fell to Carrera, 6-4 and 6-3, second singles as Giraldez dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Ivanov and fifth singles as Brander was upended by Bellomi, 6-4 and 6-1.
The match came down to sixth singles where Kavaloski took the first set from Luke Whaley, 6-3, but Whaley came back with a 7-5 win in the second set. In the third set, Whaley pulled out a 6-4 victory to win sixth singles and clinch the match for the Peacocks.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, January 31, as as they travel to Reading, Pa., to face Duquesne University in the Hillcrest Racquet Club at 5:00 p.m.
