Bronx, N.Y. (January 20, 2015) – On January 16, 1925, something occurred on Fordham's Rose Hill Campus that would alter the course of Fordham basketball history. On that date, Fordham opened the Rose Hill Gym with a 46-16 win over Boston College and 90 years later it's still home court for the men's and women's basketball programs, the oldest NCAA Division I facility in the nation.
Â
On Thursday, January 22, the Fordham University men's basketball team will experience a true Throwback Thursday when the Rams host the George Washington University Colonials in the Rose Hill Gym to celebrate the 90
th anniversary of the historic venue.
Â
Fordham will wear special throwback jerseys for the game, which will start with Fordham legend Anne Gregory and members of the Ed Conlin family presenting the game ball to the officials. Gregory and Conlin, both Fordham Athletic Hall of Famers, are the only Fordham basketball players to have their numbers retired to the rafters of the Rose Hill Gym.
Â
The game will also feature a special video montage of photos of the Rose Hill Gym through the years, highlighted by quotes from Fordham and WFUV alums Michael Kay and Bob Papa along with current head coaches
Tom Pecora and
Stephanie Gaitley and director of athletics Dave Roach. There will also be a special video salute to the gym from ESPN Around the Horn host and Fordham alum, Tony Reali.
Â
The fans have also been asked to participate in the celebration as Fordham is calling for a Maroon Out and have asked fans to wear maroon to the game (free maroon t-shirts will be given out to the first 2,500 fans through the door) and there will be a special Rose Hill Gym trivia contest throughout the night where fans can win prizes.
