Swimming & Diving Continues Run at Bucknell Invitational

Fordham Women Remain in Second Place, While Men Are Seventh

Day two of the Bucknell Invitational has been completed, and the Fordham swimming & diving teams remain right where they were after day one, as the women's team is second, while the men are seventh.
 
The Fordham women' s team has 661 points, trailing only Bucknell's 1,023 points, while the men have 331 points and are still within range of Delaware's 346 points for sixth place.
 
On Saturday, the night of finals began with the women's 200 medley relay, which saw Fordham's "A" team of Morgan Fairclough, Kelly Carroll, Shannon Lulley, and Chandler Lulley earn second overall in a time of 1:43.59.
 
In the men's 200 medley relay, the Rams' "A" grouping of J.T. Klimko, Christopher Viera, Joe Mercurio, and Thomas Shetler placed eighth overall in 1:35.13.
 
Next up was the grueling 400 individual medley event, where Fordham had six swimmers make the finals.  On the women's side, Megan Polaha took third overall in 4:26.69, while Megan Gehrich won the "C" final for 17th overall in 4:27.95.  The men's event saw Steve Sholdra also earn third overall in a school record time of 3:55.29, breaking the old mark of 3:57.97, set by Atsushi Ohtaka in 1992.  Liam Semple (18th – 4:05.81), Zachary Jacobsen (22nd – 4:10.63), and Kevin Kosciuk (24th – 4:11.15) all scored in the "C" final.
 
The following event was the 100 butterfly, where Fordham had its best showing thus far at the Invitational with nine finalists.  First, Shannon Lulley (55.87) and Polaha (56.65) grabbed third and sixth, respectively, in the "A" final, while Kalena Laurent earned 12th overall as a part of the "B" final in 57.45.  In the "C final, Aurelia O'Keefe won that race for 17th overall in 57.57 seconds, followed in by Megan Gray in 18th place (57.85).  In the men's event, Mercurio took sixth in the "A" final in 50.50 seconds, while Pat Militti won the "B" final for ninth overall in 51.05 seconds.  The "C" final saw Thomas Gillespie take 20th in 52.51 seconds with Brandon Strong in 22nd (52.62).
 
Five Rams made the finals of the 200 freestyle event, led by four in the women's competition.  Laurent and Megan Zarriello made the "A" final, taking fourth (1:51.93) and sixth (1:53.47), respectively, while Erin McBride was in the "B" final, earning 11th overall in 1:53.83.  The scoring was then rounded out by Natalie Malicki in the "C" final, taking 22nd in 1:54.87.  Miguel Mattox was the lone male swimmer in the finals of the 200 freestyle, as he place 16th overall in the "B" final in 1:46.11.
 
The 100 breaststroke event saw the Fordham women place one swimmer in each of the finals.  Carroll was in the "A" final, grabbing third in 1:03.84, while Anna Marshall was 14th overall as a part of the "B" final in 1:06.69.  Victoria McGovern was the last women's finalist in the "C" final taking 20th in 1:07.35.  Jacobsen was the lone male finalist, as he was 24th overall in the "C final in 1:00.71.
 
The Rams had another big scoring event with seven finalists in the 100 backstroke.  Spencer Chappell led the way for the women, placing fifth in the "A" final in 57.26 seconds, while Julia Day was seventh in 57.98.  The "B" final saw Theresa Goehring take 12th overall in 57.69 seconds with Fairclough winning the "C final in 55.57, good for 17th place.  In the men's finals, Klimko won the "C" final in 52.11 seconds, followed by Mattox (21st – 52.91) and Mercurio (24th - 53.36).
 
The final individual event was the men's one-meter dive, as Hanul Moon placed 15th with a score of 213.50.
 
The final event of day two was the 800 freestyle relay.  The Rams again showed well in the relays, as the women's "A" team of Laurent, McBride, Polaha, and Zarriello captured second in 7:37.07, while the men's top team of Semple, Mattox, Militti, and Sholdra grabbed eighth in 6:58.09.
 
The Bucknell Invitational concludes on Sunday.
