As the Fordham men's soccer team gets geared up for the stretch run of Atlantic 10 play, one of the team's former players is making waves in Europe.
Â
Grant Kerr, a midfielder for the Rams from 2005 to 2008, is currently playing for Vaasan Palloseura or VPS, a Finnish club in the top level of competition in Finland. The team is based in Vaasa, Finland.
Â
Kerr recently helped the club finish third in the league, which qualified VPS for the UEFA Europa League Competition. It is the first time the club has qualified for Europa League competition since 2000, and marks the first time a Fordham alum has qualified for this competition.
Â
"I am very proud of Grant," said Fordham men's soccer coach
Jim McElderry, who coached Kerr at Rose Hill.  "He has not had an easy road at the professional level to reach this point. He played a huge role in VPS qualifying for the UEFA Europa League competition, and I am looking forward to seeing him take the next step in his professional career."
Â
Prior to VPS, Kerr played for a number of professional teams, including FK Tonsberg club out of Norway (2012), the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League (2011), FC Digenis (2010), and Southend United in England (2010).
Kerr, a native of Irvine, Scotland, began his career a few hundred miles south at Everton Football Club as an academy player. After training in Everton's Youth Academy, Kerr came to Fordham in 2005 and was a four-year starter for the Rams, starting 70 of 72 games, ranking sixth all-time in games started and eighth in games played.
An Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team selection in 2005, Kerr finished his Fordham career, with six goals and eleven assists for 23 points.
