Women’s Club 4 Wins Head of Charles

Rams win first ever women’s gold medal at prominent regatta

Club 4 Results | Lightweight 4 Results

Boston, Mass. - On Saturday, October 19thand 20th Fordham University competed at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., where the women's club 4 boat won gold, becoming the first Fordham women's crew to win an event at the prestigious regatta.

Since its origin in 1965, the Head of The Charles Regatta has welcomed the world's best crew teams to the banks of the Charles River for the ultimate two-day rowing competition. This is a major international rowing event that attracts over 9,000 athletes and 300,000 spectators. The Rams had a very successful weekend with a gold medal victory in the Women's Club Four.  The last medal earned by Fordham was in 2010 in the Women's Club Eight event when Fordham finished second overall and as the top University entry.

In the women's Club Four, the Fordham crew held the lead over the entire race course.  There are four landmarks for timing on the Charles course.  At the first landmark, the Riverside Boat Club, Fordham had a .43 second lead over Clemson.  When they reached Weld Boathouse, that lead was stretched slightly with a margin of .89 seconds.

At the Cambridge Boat Club Fordham still had the lead, though it fell to .79 seconds.  It was the final stretch of the race where Fordham opened up with a strong sprint and ended up winning with a final time of 18:39.39 and a margin of 3.38 seconds, ahead of second place Clemson. Boston University came in third with a time of 18:43.40.  The field included 45 entries and Fordham finished the race 4.39 seconds off of the course record which was set in 2008.

"The four had an excellent race all the way down the course which was very controlled and aggressive," said head coach Ted Bonanno. " Freshmen coxswain Jackie Ramos steered an excellent Charles course and the rowers gave it their all as they knew only an outstanding race could produce the result they hoped for."

The Club Four lineup consisted of: Cox Jackie Ramos, Stroke Ashleigh Aitchison, 3 Katelyn Lakes, 2 Fiona Murtagh, Bow Ashley Hawkesworth

The women's lightweight 4 also improved upon last year's result with a fifth place overall finish in the Women's Lightweight 4Four's event.  The Fordham lights finished as the third fastest United States collegiate crew in the event, ten seconds ahead of sixth place Georgetown.

The Lightweight 4 lineup consisted of: Cox Megan Feerick, Stroke Alex McDonald, 3 Jenn Amoroso, 2 Courtney Cambria, Bow Maria Capuano.

This coming weekend Fordham will be competing at the Head of the Schuylkill and the Lightweights will take on Princeton and Boston University at the Princeton Chase.
