Kochel was a member of the "Seven Blocks of Granite" playing for Jim Crowley. The blocks went 12-1-3 while posting eight shutouts in the 1936-37 seasons, finishing 15th and 3rd, respectively in the final Associated Press poll. In 1938, with Kochel and Jacunski the only remaining Blocks, Fordham went 6-1-2 with seven shutouts, earning a final ranking of 15th in the AP poll.
