As a fullback with the football Rams, Hearn was a member of the 1936 team that defeated SMU, Purdue and St. Mary's and tied National Champion Pitt. He played for the 1937 football squad that went 7-0-1 and was ranked number three nationally. He closed out his football career by leading the 1938 Rams to a 6-1-2 record while helping Fordham to lead the nation in rushing, averaging 297.1 yards/game. That year, Hearn shared fullback duties with Dom Principe and scored four touchdowns while rushing for 321 yards.

On the diamond, Hearn was a three-year starter for the Rams, becoming one of the top outfielders in the East as a junior in 1938. In 1939, he hit .300 and later moved on to the professional ranks, playing professionally for the Burlington Tigers following graduation.
