Joseph Bernard was truly a part of glory days of Fordham football.
An important cog on the offensive line on the 1935-37 Fordham football teams, Joseph Bernard found his spot at right guard between Hall of Fame "Seven Blocks of Granite" linemen Alex Wojciechowicz (center) and Al Babartsky (tackle). Over three seasons from 1935-37, Bernard helped Fordham to an 18-2-5 record.
In Fordham's undefeated 1937 campaign, he and Wojciechowicz pulled out the key block to allow Dom Principe to score from two yards out to defeat TCU, 7-6, at the Polo Grounds. The Rams ended up ranked third in the country.
A back-up guard to the legendary Vince Lombardi for two seasons, Bernard stepped into the frontline guard position his senior year and was outstanding. Voted "Best All-Around" by the senior class of 1938, Joe graduated from Fordham Cum Laude.
